Current appeal: Titipounamu / Rifleman translocation

Motuihe Trust is currently welcoming donations towards our 2026 Rifleman Translocation. Please contact us if you are interested in being involved in this fantastic opportunity.

Darting high in the forest canopy, the Rifleman/Titipounamu is an energetic member of our native birds. Weighing only 6-7 grams and cloaked in green feathers, it is well adapted for jumping across tree trunks in the search for insects. If you are lucky enough to be in Titipounamu habitat, listen carefully for its high-pitched “pip call”, which is almost at the upper limit of human hearing!

Titipounamu craft elaborate nests from leaf skeletons and twigs in burrows or tree cavities, carefully layering them with soft feathers. Nesting duties are shared by both parents, who form a lifelong pair bond, although Titipounamu are also known to enlist the help of relatives to feed their nestlings.

One of the surviving members of the wren family, populations of Titipounamu have severely declined due to habitat destruction and the introduction of pests. This species is relatively rare in the North Island, but with your help, the chance to see this amazing species at Motuihe Island is now within reach.
